Education & Training

At Upstate University Hospital, education is considered critical to the success of the Emergency Management program. Extensive training is provided to all staff, with specialized training offered to different groups as required. Education is provided through a complication of live and online training.

All Staff

All members of the Upstate University Hospital staff are provided with mandatory annual education about Emergency Management through a combination of online and live training modules. This training and education include:

• General Introduction to Emergency Management
• New employee orientation
• Safety at Work (SAW)
• Incident Command Overview

Specialized Training

In addition, specialized training is provided in various areas, including:

• Decontamination training
• Disaster Mental Health
• Evacuation Equipment
• Emergency Operations Plan Training Guide Courses
• New Resident Training
• Pandemic Plan
• Nursing Orientation to Emergency Management (ppt)
• Incident Command Leadership

Incident Command Leadership: It is critical that those who are most likely to fill a leadership role (Incident Commander, Section Chief) possess a higher level of understanding regarding the Incident Command process than those they will be expected to lead. To meet this need "basic training" on Incident Command and the National Incident Management Response Program is undertaken as a self-study within the first six months of appointment. All individuals who fill a role on the Incident Command Team are required to take NIMS compliance training to include ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800, depending upon their defined roles.
