Medical Toxicology Fellowship
The Medical Toxicology Fellowship, new in July 2011, provides physicians with training in all aspects of the clinical practice of medical toxicology. Fellows will develop expertise in the diagnosis and management of poisoned patients.The Medical Toxicology Fellowship has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Examination (ACGME).
Program Basics
The goals of this program are to provide a broad-based and in-depth experience that includes:
- Acute care medical toxicology
- Management of the critically-ill poisoned patient
- Occupational toxicology
- Environmental exposures
- Poison center management
- Opportunity and time for independent research
The fellow will participate in regularly scheduled bedside rounds on hospitalized toxicology patients at Upstate University Hospital and the Golisano Children's Hospital, as well as many activities at the Upstate New York Poison Center which provides service and consultation to all parts of New York north of Westchester and Orange Counties.
The first year will include a bimonthly research seminar with the goal of providing a solid background in the design and implementation of independent research. This seminar will also include readings and training in statistics and how to interpret the medical literature. Other activities will include participation in regularly scheduled conferences, weekly journal club and other teaching opportunities.
Applicants
Prospective applicants should be graduates of and board eligible in an accredited medical specialty. These include Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Occupational Medicine and Internal Medicine.
