A paramedic is the highest level of field provider. Becoming a paramedic means you would enter into one of the most dynamic and intimate healthcare professions. Providing acute medical care and transportation of patients out of the hospital requires a unique body of knowledge, skills and abilities. The SUNY Upstate Medical University Paramedic Program exceeds the National DOT Standards and will prepare you to become a competent entry level paramedic. Pre-hospital medicine is an emerging profession that you will find to be rewarding and challenging at the same time.

Upstate’s program consists of approximately 1200 classroom hours during which students study many areas of medicine including:

  • Anatomy & physiology
  • Illness and injury prevention
  • Medical/legal issues
  • Pathophysiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Medical emergencies
  • Patient assessment
  • Trauma
  • Neonatology
  • Pediatrics
  • Geriatrics
  • Operations
  • Hazardous materials

Paramedic students also spend approximately 300 hours in a series of clinical rotations in the hospital setting where emergency procedures are practiced and critical thinking skills are applied to real patients. Students also complete approximately 300 hours of internship working in the field under the preceptorship of experienced paramedics.
