Residency Planning
Planning for residency can be a seemingly overwhelming and complicated process. When you get to this stage of your career development, there are many resources that can assist you. Your advisory dean will be the a most valuable point of contact as you navigate the process. We strongly encourage you to begin your journey by exploring the Careers in Medicine program. After that, take a look at these additional resources to better inform your route.

SYRACUSE MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Career-Advisory Network
The Alumni Association has created a Career Advisory Network for students to connect with alumni around the country. The system is available on-line. If there is a certain region or specialty that you are interested in, but not listed, the office will be happy to help you reach out to alumni who may not be on the list.

This website has some residency tips including sample curriculum vitaes and personal statements of graduates.
AAMC RESOURCES FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
Good resource for links to information about residency planning, USMLE Step II, residency interview travel discounts, etc.
NATIONAL RESIDENCY MATCHING PROGRAM (NRMP)
Information regarding the NRMP match and a list of all programs participating in the match.
ELECTRONIC RESIDENCY APPLICATION SERVICE (ERAS)
Most of the programs participating in the NRMP use the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for their applications.
SAN FRANCISCO MATCHING PROGRAM
Specialty Matching Programs include Child Neurology, Neurological Surgery, and Ophthalmology. Applicants who are interested in registering for a specialty match should download the registration forms from the SFMP web site. The directories of programs are also on-line and are accessible from the SFMatch web site.
AUA RESIDENCY MATCHING PROGRAM FOR UROLOGY
Application materials for the Urology Match are available on-line. Some programs use ERAS for the application process. You will find a list of accredited urology programs at the above website.
FREIDA ONLINE (FELLOWSHIP AND RESIDENCY ELECTRONIC DATABASE ACCESS)
American Medical Association FREIDA Online is a database containing information on approximately 7,500 graduate medical education programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), as well as 200 combined specialty programs.
CAREERS IN MEDICINETM
A four-phase course that is designed to assist you in understanding your options for choosing a specialty and selecting and applying to a residency program to meet your career objectives. Careers in Medicine can be used as a self managed course. Careers in Medicine uses a career development model that is widely-accepted throughout higher education. Use AAMC ID # and access code to login. If you do not have an access code, contact the Student Affairs Office.
ROADMAP TO RESIDENCY
Look under topic: Students and Residents Free as a pdf download. This publication is provided by the AAMC. It explains the residency application process from the beginning to the match and beyond.
AMERICAN BOARD OF MEDICAL SPECIALTIES (ABMS)
Describes ABMS organization and includes descriptions of each specialty and requirements for board certifications.
AAMC & NRMP joint report "Charting Outcomes in the Match"
Data includes USMLE Step 1 scores, number of ranks, AOA membership, publications and research projects presented overall and by specialty for 15 medical specialties.
