Faculty

Janet A. Sobczak, Ph.D., PMHCNS-BC, RN, is an Assistant Professor & Coordinator of the Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Nursing in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Sobczak obtained her BSN from Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, her MSN in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, her PhD from the Medical College of
Georgia, Augusta, Georgia, and also completed a post doctoral fellowship at the University of Washington’s Department of Psychosocial and Community Health Nursing. She is nationally certified in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and is currently completing a post master’s certificate program at the State University of New
York at Stonybrook.

Registration Fee

  • Early Registration Fee: $145 postmarked by October 1, 2009
  • Regular Registration Fee: $165 postmarked after October 1, 2009
    Includes tuition, course materials, light continental breakfast and lunch.

Course Objectives

Following this program the participant will be able to:

  1. Correlate neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with psychopharmacology and psychotropic drugs.
  2. Discuss the general principles of prescribing psychotropic medications to adult clients, including related ethical and legal issues.
  3. Describe indications, targeted effects, drug interactions, side effects and potential adverse effects of common psychotropics, including:
    • Antipsychotics
    • Antidepressants
    • Mood stabilizing agents
    • Anxiolytics
    • Cognitive enhancers
  4. Explain current protocols for the treatment of common mental health conditions such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders and thought disorders.
