Special Programs The College of Medicine offers several programs for students with special interests: MD/PhD Program
Students interested in pursuing careers in medical research and academic medicine may appl to our seven-year MD/PhD program which combines medical school and graduate school and awards dual degrees.
The MD/PhD program offers students a wide selection of research areas for their laboratory work. All faculty members in the College of Graduate Studies are eligible to serve as mentors.
MD/PHD Program Website
The College of Graduate Studies consists of six programs in biomedical science:
Faculty in University Hospital's 18 clinical departments are also eligible to serve as mentors if they are members of the graduate faculty and actively conducting research.
Students are selected for the program based on their academic records and qualifications for independent scholarship in specialized fields of study. Most successful applicants will have spent at least a summer or its equivalent engaged in full-time research, and completed advanced course work beyond the basic requirements for admission to the College of Medicine.
Students accepted into the MD/PhD Program receive full tuition waivers and an annual stipend of $21,514, with increases expected.
Rural Medical Education Program (RMED)
Upstate medical students may request to complete up to nine months of their third and fourth years at a rural site through the Rural Medical Education Program (RMED). This multi-departmental program run by the Department of Family Medicine is for students interested in careers in primary care or in practicing a specialty in rural areas or small towns.
With the support and training of local board-certified physicians, along with faculty from the main Upstate campus, RMED students develop the intense clinical and diagnostic skills necessary for practice in sparsely-populated areas.
RMED students develop relationships with clinical preceptors and their communities, and they participate in continuous and comprehensive care of preceptors' patients in both ambulatory and hospital settings. Each RMED student also conducts a community health project.

Medical Student Research Program (MSRP)
This program is for medical students who wish to acquire strong research backgrounds without the formal structure of a degree-granting program. Students in MSRP work with dedicated faculty in the basic sciences and clinical research departments. The program provides students with three, 12-week periods for research over three years. With the aid of a faculty sponsor, each student is expected to write a publishable paper or prepare an honors thesis. There are 20 positions available in MSRP each year. Students apply during their first year in medical school.
More Research Opportunities
Medical students are encouraged to engage in Summer Research on an informal basis under the supervision of faculty members with whom they share common interests. Many students pursue such research projects during the summer between their first and second years. Students may receive a stipend for their participation in a project or may pursue the formal approval process required to receive academic credit.
Students may pursue their interests in research by taking Research-Oriented Electives including:
-
Communicative Sciences
-
Epidemiological Research
-
Research in Family Medicine/ Primary Health Care
-
Family Medicine Research Project
-
Geriatric Research Project
-
Hematology Research
-
Research Elective in Infectious Disease
-
Pharmacology Research
-
Psychiatry Research
-
Research in Preventive Medicine (Binghamton only).
