The Blackwell Medical Scholarship Program External Icon provides a unique opportunity for first-year students. Those who meet and maintain the standards of the program are guaranteed a place in our College of Medicine upon their graduation from Hobart & William Smith Colleges.

This program is for high school students who are from rural areas, underrepresented minority groups or are the first generation in their families to attend college. To be considered, you must:

  • Have NEW SAT score of 1310 or better or OLD SAT score of 1250 or better (combined Critical Reading & Math) or ACT score of 28 Composite or better
  • Have a minimum 90% High School Grade Point Average
  • Demonstrate commitment to a career in medicine

Students accepted into this program will complete their undergraduate degree at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and are guaranteed admission to Upstate's College of Medicine, pending all program standards are met.

Acceptance into these programs indicates your willingness to participate in the Rural Medical Scholars Program (RMSP). You will therefore be assigned to the RMSP track as a medical student at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

In order to retain their acceptance, students must maintain a minimum cumulative and pre-requisite science undergraduate GPA of 3.50 EACH Semester (we do not round up), earn no grade lower than a "C", and score a minimum of 509 (80th percentile rank) on the MCAT. Applicants have a maximum of two attempts (if needed) to attain the minimum score by August 31st, one year prior to their expected matriculation at SUNY Upstate. Acceptance is conditional and will be rescinded if conditions of acceptance and admission requirements are not met.
