MPH FAQ’s
How many credit hours does the degree require?
The MPH degree requires a minimum of 42 credit hours:
- 27 Core Course Credit Hours
- 15 Elective hours
- Fieldwork and Capstone required for completion
What undergraduate degrees best prepare for the MPH degree?
There are no undergraduate degrees which ‘better’ to prepare a student v. another. We welcome all applicants and seek a diverse student body.
Are there any Pre-requisites required for the MPH degree?
Any biological science course (human biological science)
Under what conditions is a waiver granted for the GRE?
If the applicant has a professional degree or is currently enrolled in that degree program, you may seek to obtain a waiver of the GRE.

I am a PhD, MD, JD, (other) student and wish to pursue the MPH during my studies. What would this look like?
The CNYMPH website has example plans of study for the PhD and MD students. We are working on a plan of study for other types of students wishing to pursue the MPH degree while earning another degree. We realize each student pursues different interests and we will work with the applicant to reach their desired public health focus.
Are there any on-line courses?
Not at this time.
If I am a University Hosptial employee do I need to attend MPH orientation?
Yes all students need to attend regardless of whether they are full or part-time or employees.
Is the Program Accreditated?
The program has been approved by the NY State Department of Education but has not been approved by the national accreditation body, CEPH (Council on Education for Public Health).
A program CANNOT seek accreditation until one class of students has graduated. It is our intention to enter into accreditation status after we graduate our first class.
If I graduate from a currently non-accreditated program, can I sit for the public health board exam?
If our program is accredited within three years of the students’ graduation (retrospectively), a student is eligible to sit for the exam.
Transfer of Credits
A maximum of 6 (six) credit hours of graduate work can be transferred into the CNYMPH degree program. The six credits must be related to public health.
