Accreditation Services" should read: The Office of Continuing Medical Education at SUNY Upstate Medical University has been surveyed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and awarded accreditation for 4 years (through November 2009) as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians.
ACCME accreditation seeks to assure both physicians and the public that continuing medical education activities provided by the Office of Continuing Medical Education at SUNY Upstate Medical University meet the high standards of the Essential Areas, Elements and Policies for Accreditation as specified by the ACCME.
The ACCME rigorously evaluates the overall continuing medical education programs of institutions according to standards adopted by all seven sponsoring organizations of the ACCME. These are:
- American Board of Medical Specialties
- American Hospital Association
- American Medical Association
- Association for Hospital Medical Education
- Association of American Medical Colleges
- Council of Medical Specialty Societies
- Federation of State Medical Boards of the U.S., Inc.

- Development of a needs assessment process
- Instructional design
- Evaluation of educational effectiveness and program analysis
- Certification review
The Office of Continuing Medical Education can certify
- Institutional educational activities such as grand rounds
- Conferences, workshops and meetings
- Enduring materials such as video tapes or computer programs
In addition, the Office of Continuing Medical Education will keep an electronic record of credits earned for individual health care professionals and can produce a paper report upon request.
