Designated AIDS Center (Adult)

The Designated AIDS Center (DAC) provides outpatient and inpatient medical care for HIV infected people from the 15 county Central New York area. The DAC is staffed by Infectious Disease physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed social workers. Patient care is provided through a medical case management model with the nurse practitioner as case manager. Each patient receives continuity of care through the same case manager, physician, and social worker for all of his or her outpatient care. The DAC accepts all insurances that University Hospital currently participates with including Medicaid, Medicare, ADAP Plus, Family Health Plus and commercial insurances. HMO insurance may require prior approval from the patient's primary physician for treatment at the DAC.

In addition to medical care and social work services, the DAC has expanded on-site services for mental health, substance use and nutritional counseling. All of our patients are eligible to receive these services. Funding for these services is provided through the Ryan White Care Act Title II.

The Upstate Medical University's University Hospital has full outpatient services available to HIV infected people including dental, ophthalmology, oncology, dermatology, and gynecology.

Appointments for services offered by the DAC can be made by self or physician referral by calling (315) 464-5533 or toll free (877) 464-5540 X 5533.

All DAC services are available at Crouse Physicians Office Building, 725 Irving Ave, Ste. 211 Syracuse, NY 13210.

This program offers continuing prenatal care and/or consultation to any HIV positive pregnant woman and seeks cooperation as an informed volunteer to participate in research protocols where appropriate. Research participation is not a requirement for care.

Appointments may be made by calling the Perinatal Center at (315) 464-4458.

Research

Many laboratories at the SUNY Upstate Medical University conduct HIV/AIDS research studies, such as. . .

Bernard Poiesz, M.D.
Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology

Dr. Poiesz's laboratory studies the biology of human retroviruses including the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Funding for this work comes from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases; and the National Institute of Child Health Development. The laboratory serves as the Virology Research Laboratory for both the Adult and Pediatric AIDS Cooperative Treatment Group Consortium including the University of Rochester; SUNY Health Science Center, Buffalo and SUNY Upstate Medical University, at Syracuse.

The group is also the virology service laboratory for all pediatric HIV testing in Central New York. Corporate collaborations include Proctor and Gamble and Cellular Products, Inc. Current research includes studies on improved retroviral detection systems, retroviral biology, epidemiology and phylogeny, and antiviral drug and vaccine assessment for efficacy and resistance. In the past fourteen years, the laboratory has published approximately 250 papers on these topics.
