1/29/12 Strong Women, Strong Hearts

Cardiovascular nurses Alicia Taylor and Elizabeth Urban talk about a new health event in Syracuse called Strong Women, Strong Hearts. The day will feature special presentations by Upstate Cardiologist Luna Bhatta and Upstate’s Heart Failure Coordinator Lorri Langdon, among others. The event will also provide free health screenings, nutritional information with heart-healthy tastings, exercise information and classes, and stress-management presentations that will incorporate therapeutic massage, yoga, and meditation classes, as well as Reiki therapy.

1/29/12 Training cardiovascular perfusionists
Bruce Searles, director of the Cardiovascular Perfusion program in Upstate’s College of Health Professions, will speak about the job of a perfusionist (they operate the heart-lung machine in the operating room) and how his program goes about training them, what sorts of background they have coming into the program and how long the training lasts and whats involved.

Dale Avers, DPT, PhD, director of Upstate’s post-professional doctoral program for physical therapists, discusses the current trends in physical therapy education. All physical therapy training programs have converted to doctoral programs, and as more physical therapists increase their education, more patients address their PTs as doctor.
