the healing muse

Volume 13, 2013

Phoebe Brown

I have composed and revised
a team
of doctors
over the nine years
of this illness.

I choose them
the way I select
words in poetry and prose.

Some are cut. They do not
fit within the cottonwood walls
of my narrative.

Others gain
my respect. They let me
place them into the
metaphor, into energy rippling
across pages.

These cautious few
tread into the thicket
of mysterious illness
the way a cat hunts
a squirrel.

To these physicians,
I am the woman with scars
and smiles. Together we walk
dignified along
this ever-changing dirt path.

They give me their art,
so I give them mine.
