6th Annual SUNY Upstate Medical Alumni Writing Contest

2008 Theme – My Patient, My Teacher: Stories from Medical Practice

Physicians undergo the rigors of medical education and then spend their professional live continuing to learn the latest techniques and discoveries in medicine. With this knowledge, they attempt to heal their patients and show them how to lead healthier lives. Sometimes, however, the tables are turned, and physicians find themselves learning from their patients. This kind of experience can also be deeply rewarding to the physician who finds in this encounter a revelatory reminder of why he or she went into medicine in the first place.

Contest

Write a short essay describing a patient who deepened your appreciation of medicne's extraordinary reach. Capture for your readers the excitement and joy such a patient brings to you and how that joy is then reflected back into your practice.

Deadlines & Guidelines

  • 250-750 words, MS Word, double spaced, numbered pages, title page with name, contact info and Upstate class year by April 15, 2008.
  • Winner will be announed in June and receive recognition at the Medical Alumni Weekend 2008. All entries will be considered for publication in The Healing Muse, SUNY Upstate Medical University's literary arts journal.
